Bipolar Disorder: First Steps to Take by Robyn Tamanaha, LMFT

If you’ve noticed extreme shifts in your mood that seems outside of what should be expected, here are some first steps to take:

  1. Get a physical exam from your primary care doctor. Why? The first step is to always rule out any symptoms that may be related to medical conditions. During the physical exam you will be able to discuss your mood shifts and depending on your medical history, your doctor may ask follow-up questions. The physical exam will also include you going to a lab to get blood work completed. This is important because you will find out if your thyroid levels are within normal range: Thyroid diseases can impact mood and sleep.

  2. Meet with a mental health therapist who specializes in bipolar disorder. Why? A therapist who is trained and has experience with bipolar disorder will be able to explore your overall mood history and determine if the mood shifts you are experiencing are due to bipolar disorder. Sometimes symptoms of different diagnoses can seem similar, so a therapist who specializes in bipolar disorder will be able to look for distinct patterns and describe examples of how the symptoms of bipolar disorder can manifest in your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. This therapist will also have experience with treatment interventions for this diagnosis and can assist you in managing what you’re experiencing.

  3. Meet with a psychiatrist. Why? They are also able to provide a diagnosis and are trained medical doctors who can discuss with you if medications can help to manage your symptoms. Oftentimes, medication(s) can help manage symptoms enough so that an individual is able to use the strategies discussed in therapy.
