4 Ways to Invest in Your Mental Health by Robyn Tamanaha, LMFT

Mental health is an individual's overall health and well-being. Mental health can include how happy an individual feels, how fulfilled they feel in different areas of life, how they problem solve and cope with difficulties, and how they view themselfEveryone has a different level of mental health. If you want to have improved mental health then there are actionable steps that you can take to work towards this.

  • Take a personal inventory: This can include all of your responsibilitiesrolestasks, obligations, and where and how you spend your time. Taking an inventory can assist in reflecting on major areas of your life and how it is impacting you.

  • Check in on your medical health: This can be done by getting a physical exam from your Primary Care Physician. The mind and body are connected, and stress can have an impact on physical manifestations of discomfort and overall health. Also, thyroid abnormalities can influence mood and extreme changes in mood.

  • Reflect on your social inner circle: Who are the top people that you spend the most time talking to or spend the most time with? What are these individuals like? What is your relationship with them like? In what ways are they, or the relationship, helpful or unhelpful?

  • Consider therapy: A common myth is that an individual needs to have a serious diagnosis, or be “bad enough,” to go to therapy. This can lead people to wait until things get so distressing and troublesome before they go to therapy. In general, people who come to therapy want to have more satisfaction or fulfillment in their life, practice how to make decisions in their life and in their relationships, and process the accumulation of distressing situations that they experienced so that they can move forward and live the life that they want.
