5 Activities that Can Help You Get Sleep by Robyn Tamanaha, LMFT

According to the CDC (2014), adults need at least 7 hours of sleep for optimal health and well being; however, in California nearly 38% of adults obtained less than 7 hours.

  1. Rule Out Medical Concerns: Data collected from the CDC found that individuals obtaining less than 7 hours of sleep experienced health risk factors, such as obesity, physical inactivity, alcohol usage, smoking, arthritis, and asthma, to name a few. Make an appointment with your primary care physician to make sure that your sleep trouble is not related to a medical concern.

  2. Hygge: A few years ago, the term hygge became popular in the United States. So popular that it became viral on social media and the internet. Hygge is the Scandinavian concept of coziness, which includes activities that lead a person to feel soothed, cozy, and comfortable. An example might include taking a hot shower or bath, drinking decaf tea, or snuggling up with your pet on the couch. What is your hygge?

  3. Meditation: Engaging in meditation can reduce stress and prepare you for sleep. CLICK HERE to read 3 Reasons Why Meditation Can Help You Sleep Better.

  4. Sleep Routine: Establishing a routine to prepare for bed and maintaining a consistent sleep time are part of a sleep routine. Want to know more steps in the sleep routine? CLICK HERE to read 6 Ways to Create a Sleep Routine That Works For You.

  5. Walk Away and Sign Off: Whether it be the WFH (work from home) life due to the pandemic, or the fact that society is constantly on computers and phones, it’s easy to be continuously connected to technology. Sign out of your emails on your phone. Shut down your computer. Walk away and close the door.
